Yet another semester has begun at Towson University and a band has arrived to welcome new and continuing students. Even a band that's never been to this campus enjoyed the gig enormously.
A small group of students clustered around the stage as The Orion Experience played rock and roll with added keyboards and thumping rhythms, their music somewhat similar to ska band No Doubt. The fivesome from Manhattan, N.Y. had never performed on campus before, but played like any other band featured in the area.
This is our first time at Towson, but we loved it," the lead singer said while the band was packing up after a successful performance. He preferred to be called Orion with no last name.
The Manhattan based indie pop rock band The Orion Experience performed in Paws on Thursday night, September 10, 2009. They were one of the bands to kick off a new school year besides the bands that performed at the Welcome Concert in August.
They came together when Orion and keyboardist/vocalist Linda Horwatt met in college and started writing songs together. They eventually met the rest of the band in New York. None of the band members are Towson students and they remain on an independent label.
However, the students were loving the show. "It was awesome. We were really happy that some people came up and danced with us," Orion said. "People had fun." He additionally stated that they felt some good vibes from them.
"Definitely good vibes," Horwatt added.
Freshman Samantha Orr said, "I thought it was amazing! Because they were here, it's been worthwhile. I'm looking forward to more events like this."
"They were rad," another freshman said. "It was a lot of fun, they were really good, and I had a really good time."
Orion said the band is working on a new album to be released soon. They are also writing a series of "groovy" children's songs, which they may release later on.
